Friederike Meier

What happens when artificial intelligence defines feminine beauty through its opposite? This question lies at the centre of my work.

By combining artificial intelligence, traditional portrait painting and digital media, I explore what kinds of portrayals of women emerge when beauty is no longer defined by conventional ideals, but by average features, androgyny or perceived imperfection.

What interests me is what, for me, constitutes true beauty: faces and personalities that defy simple categorisation and move us precisely because of their contradictions and individuality.

The figures that emerge from this process exist somewhere between the familiar and the unfamiliar. They appear both approachable and distant, resisting any clear categorisation.

Many of my works are accompanied by short video animations that expand the painted moment and raise questions about identity, memory and self-representation.
