Once the brush touches the surface, the stroke begins to speak over the words in my mind and a conversation begins. I’m driven by a need to externalize the world as I see it. To understand the world I see. I translate it into impulsive movements and through something I cannot entirely name.
Sometimes when I begin with an intention, or a thought, the painting asks for something else. When I try to control it too much, the work becomes rigid, and I lose the possibility of discovering. It is when I let go, when I stop trying to decide what the painting should become, that it begins to find its own way.
I could say that the paintings contain my thoughts, my concerns, my emotions. But there is something larger. Sometimes I feel that I am not doing very much at all, as if my hand had formed a bond with something outside of me, bigger than anything.
I have so many questions, we live in contradictions, grief, love, fascination, and concern for this world. There are inner battles within each of us, silences that hold deep truths.
And I guess life is very simple, and impossible to fully explain.
I dance with it.
