Sebastian Schubbe

I work primarily in color photography, using it as a deliberate stylistic tool to carry mood and atmosphere rather than simply document reality. To push this further, I shoot with modified analog lenses — altered with hairspray and similar techniques — paired with both analog film and digital cameras. This softens and distorts the image just enough to strip away some of its literal realism, creating an abstract veil around a scene that leaves room for interpretation rather than dictating exactly what should be felt.

My approach is also rooted in time: on my travels I typically lived two to three months in each country, sometimes up to a year, immersing myself long enough to move past the surface and engage with genuinely complex, culturally specific themes rather than avoiding them. That immersion changed how I see — and I now apply the perspectives I learned abroad to how I photograph Germany, looking at the familiar with a foreigner’s eye.

In my film work, I push the expression of people and landscapes as far as I can, intensifying gesture, light, and atmosphere until my own perception becomes legible to someone who wasn’t there. Ultimately, my work is less about depicting a place than about translating a felt experience.

Biography

I am a documentary photographer who spent four years traveling the world, capturing stories across cultures and continents. After completing photography school in 2020, I set out from Hamburg to Nepal, journeying through countries such as Pakistan and Armenia before reaching remote villages in the Himalayas. This journey shaped the way I see and document the world — my images focus on unique, fleeting moments, whether in Germany or in the most remote corners of the globe.

Since returning, I have expanded into new areas of photography and filmmaking. At my last exhibition a few years ago, I sold a wide selection of my work, and several images were later featured in my book Vantastic World, published in collaboration with National Geographic.

Today, I work as a professional photographer and filmmaker, continuing to document unique moments and stories from around the world.
