I’m Miriam Schimka, the artist behind Captain Canvas. Every painting has a past—I imagine what happens next. Inspired by nostalgia, I collect forgotten vintage paintings and continue their narratives by adding robots, spaceships, superheroes, and other unexpected characters. In my main series, Yesterday’s Tomorrow, I build on the original artwork rather than replacing it, creating a new chapter while preserving its character and charm. Alongside these works, my new series Gothic.Future explores movement, longing, and imagined destinations through a darker, more mysterious lens. Through humor, curiosity, and storytelling, I invite viewers to look again, discover unexpected connections, and see familiar scenes from a new perspective. Even forgotten paintings still have stories left to tell.
