Margarethe Ucinski

Margarethe Ucinski treats the canvas not simply as a support, but as an active part of the composition. Its physical properties, including tension, format, edges, and weave, shape the structure of the work. Her practice examines grids and underlying geometries. The paintings develop through the interaction of paint and the resistance of the surface, resulting in presence rather than representation. Through shifts between proximity and distance, she questions the traditional distinction between figure and ground and engages with processes of change, transition, and spatial relationships.

Margarethe was born in Poland and came to Germany when she was 3 years old. She studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and has lived in Berlin since 2018.
