BAAM

Luka Torkovic

Power and anatomy are the primary drivers of my work as I explore dynamic movement, bold lines, and the deliberate reshaping of physical forms.

While my classical background brings a deep understanding of structure, my current work breaks those traditional rules of anatomy to reinvent how human and animal forms move and interact.

Executed in archival ink on paper, my drawings combine clean precision with an intuitive, free-flowing process. I draw directly onto the paper with no pre-sketching, using uninterrupted lines and fine dotting to transform my subjects into mythical entities filled with raw energy. It is a direct and unforgiving method with no room for error. Yet error, being an unavoidable element of creation, always intervenes to redirect the drawing, ultimately defining the final output. This unpredictability makes mistake an essential collaborator in my work.

Drawing is a discipline. It is a practice that connects the mind and the hand. Drawing strengthens our physical ability to execute precision, but most importantly, it trains us to manifest vision into reality. The convergence of those two forces is what creates art.

Biography

After a decade away from the studio, my return to fine art represents a deliberate choice to reclaim my voice and fully commit as an artist, sharing my vision without holding back.

My journey began at the School of Applied Art and Design and continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, where I specialized in classical drawing and printmaking. That rigorous training gave me a disciplined arm and a deep understanding of structure. Early in my career, local group shows grew into having my work presented at the Zagreb Print Biennial and earning an invite to an international residency in Belgium for emerging artists. But then, life took me in a different direction, and my studio work had to stop.

Ten years later, I made my way back to fine art through weekly drawing sessions with live models, retraining my observational skills and getting my hand back into form. Today, my classical foundation serves a new purpose: it gives me the baseline to intentionally break the rules of anatomy and reinvent physical forms.

The year of saying YES began. In 2026, I registered my Art & Media Studio, published a coloring book, sent my first illustration invoices, completed several commissions, hosted my first workshop, and applied to various art events. One of which brought me right here.

Exhibiting at HAAM marks my full return to a dedicated studio practice.
