Katharina Daneke

Visually inspired by coastal scenes as spaces of relation and intersection Katharina’s work elaborates on the concept of connection. Through her abstract expressions, she investigates this notion, employing natural, warm color palettes, profound focal points, and fluid organic movements.

The genesis of Katharina’s creative process often comes from seascapes and beach moments, where the rich tapestry of natural textures serves as an inspiration. Her artistic vision is shaped by the intricate formations crafted by elements such as seashells or sediments layered by gravity over time.

Katharina’s artworks are a celebration of materiality and texture, featuring gentle washes, paint infused with sand, creamy marks and the use of raw materials like cotton paper or canvas. Through the fusion of coastal and earthy aesthetics, she aspires to convey profound concepts such as grounding, connection, and tranquility.

Biography

I’m a contemporary abstract artist based in Hamburg, Germany.

My work begins with observation. I’m drawn to the changing colours of the seasons, weathered materials, shifting light, and the small moments that often go unnoticed. Rather than painting these places directly, I translate their atmosphere into abstract compositions built through colour, texture, and gesture.

Before establishing my painting practice, I completed a PhD in urban geography, researching the visual experience of place through photography. Further studies in urban photography at Goldsmiths, University of London, deepened my interest in observation as a creative practice. Looking back, I see that painting has become a continuation of that way of seeing—only now I work with colour instead of the camera.

Today, I work primarily with acrylic, natural pigments, and textured materials on paper and canvas. My paintings are held in private collections internationally and have been exhibited in group exhibitions in Hamburg.
