Kai Klostermann

My photographic practice exists at the intersection of performance, the body and
photography. I am not interested in the finished image of a person, but in the moment
when control recedes and something emerges that eludes conscious direction.
I create photographic situations in which movement, water, time and light become a
space of experience. Rather than simply documenting an image, the camera records
the trace of a fleeting moment. The resulting works do not describe a person; they
make an experience visible.
At the heart of my ongoing series Threshold (Schwelle) lies this fragile in-between
state—a condition that can neither be held nor repeated. I am less interested in
definitive statements than in the openness of the moment. Photography becomes not
evidence of an event, but its condensation.
My work invites viewers to look beyond outward appearance and instead encounter
what reveals itself in the brief moment of letting go.

Biography

Kai Klostermann (b. 1971, Hamburg) lives and works in Hamburg, Germany. He is a
self-taught photographic artist who creates photographic situations in which
movement, water and time become a space of experience.
His work exists at the intersection of performance, the body and photography. Rather
than simply documenting an image, the camera records the trace of a moment. The
focus is not on pose or staging, but on the instant when control recedes and something
emerges that eludes conscious direction.
Using water, movement, time and light, Klostermann creates images that do not
explain the human figure but make experiences visible. His ongoing series Threshold
(Schwelle) explores this space between perception and transformation—a fleeting
moment that cannot be held, yet becomes visible through photography.
His work has been exhibited at Artistmeeting Bruges (2026), ARTe Konstanz (2026),
group exhibitions in Hamburg (2026), HAAM Hamburg (2025), ARTe Wiesbaden (2025),
and CUX ART, Cuxhaven (2024/2025). His works are held in private collections in
Germany and Belgium.
