BAAM

My work navigates the tension between reality and perception, capturing fractured moments of urban life where the familiar becomes strange. I am drawn to the fleeting and overlooked scenes marked by human presence yet unsettled by disruption. Through painting and photography, I reshape reality, layering beauty with imbalance, precision with distortion. My images remain open-ended, inviting viewers to engage. By weaving classical aesthetics with digital influences, I explore the interplay between connection and alienation, order and chaos. In breaking the logic of reality’s appearance, I create visual disruptions that challenge perceptions, provoke thought, and suggest new ways of seeing.

Joana Lucas is a Portuguese visual artist based in Berlin since 2005. Her photorealistic paintings examine the tension between reality and perception, capturing fragmented moments of urban life. Rooted in observation yet deliberately unsettling, her work considers how images mediate experience and shape understanding. Integrating classical aesthetics with digital influences, Lucas explores the fragile interplay between connection and alienation, order and chaos. She graduated in Visual Arts in Lisbon, studied at the Statens Kunstakademi in Oslo, and completed advanced photography studies in Lisbon. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is included in collections across Europe, Asia, and North America.
