Kala studied fine art at Pratt Institute, New York, with a focus on painting and sculpture, as well as black and white photography. Since 2005, she has been working in screenprinting and has finessed her fine grain, layered method, making it her primary medium. For the past two years, she has turned to the more tactile method of artmaking with ceramics, which has allowed for further exploration of the 2D image on a 3-D surface and expand her vocabulary into the realm of sculpture. She has worked with earthenware, stoneware, ball, fire, and air dry clay, experimenting intensively with various glazes and firing methods – including raku – throughout the past several years. Prior to her devotion to screen printing and ceramics, Kala received a BFA in Film directing from the School of Visual Arts in New York and has worked for renowned art institutions such as Art21 (PBS) and widely in the film industry. Since 2016, Kala has lived in Berlin, Germany, the art capital of Germany, where a plethora of professional studios has been at her disposal.
