My artistic practice explores the intersections of identity, memory, and cultural construction in Chile and Latin America. Working primarily through painting, I combine traditional techniques with research based on family photographic archives, historical documents, and visual references to investigate how images shape both personal and collective narratives.
My work examines themes such as cultural dependency, landscape, the formation of nation-states, and the relationship between memory and place. By reinterpreting archival materials through painting, I question how dominant historical narratives are produced and how Eurocentric perspectives have influenced the representation of local identities and histories. I am particularly interested in revealing the tension between individual experience and collective memory, while exposing the power structures embedded in visual culture.
Rather than treating painting as a medium of representation alone, I understand it as a critical space where images can be reconstructed, displaced, and re-signified. My philosophy is grounded in the idea that painting can function as a form of visual archaeology, uncovering overlooked histories and creating new ways of understanding the relationship between memory, territory, and cultural identity.
Biography
FEDE TAUS (1984, Santiago de Chile) is a painter and visual artist. His work explores the relationships
between image, memory, and cultural construction, investigating how images participate in the formation of
individual and collective narratives. Drawing on family photographic archives, found imagery, and historical
references, he develops a painting practice that examines the boundaries between document, fiction, and
interpretation.
He studied at the University of Chile and completed a Master’s degree in Media Arts at the Academy of Fine
Arts Leipzig (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig), Germany, under the supervision of Alba D’Urbano. He lives and works between Chile and Germany. His work has been exhibited internationally at venues
including NordArt, MONOPOL Berlin, and Hauskunst Mitte, and has received support from the DAAD and the
Free State of Saxony, among others
