BAAM

Cristina Carrillo

My practice is observational figurative painting, working primarily in acrylics on wood panels, though I have also painted on cotton canvas and MDF. Wood gives me a surface with presence and weight that suits the stillness I look for in a scene.

I work from reference photographs taken in the cities I move through, above all Berlin, but also Madrid or Cyprus. The paintings begin with tonal studies and compositional blocking before I commit to the final surface. Light is always the real subject: the particular quality of an afternoon on water, a café half in shadow, a pedestrian mid-stride against an urban backdrop.

Conceptually, I am drawn to the threshold between the manufactured and the living. My ongoing series Synthetic Cities, Organic Lives, also known as Urban Haikus, pairs each painting with an original haiku poem. The series asks what it means to be human inside spaces built for function rather than feeling. Earlier recurring projects, The Weekend and The Beauty of Everyday Places, explored the same territory through a quieter, more intimate lens.
The haiku form is not decorative. It is a structural constraint that sharpens both the image and the idea, forcing me toward the single, precise moment rather than a general mood.

Biography

Born in Madrid, Spain, my journey began on the city’s lively streets. I have lived in Finland, Peru, Ireland, and Germany (Berlin).

I grew up watching everyday magic unfold. Mornings revealed sunlight dancing through leaves and cafés coming to life. I marveled at the water reflecting the sky… each moment sparking my passion.

I blend impressionism with street photography. Every brushstroke captures a story of light and shadow.

Through my work, I invite you to see familiar scenes in a fresh light and discover the beauty hidden in everyday moments.
