My artistic practice explores identity, perception, and inner realities through figurative painting and sculpture. Working with acrylic on canvas as well as plaster and 3D-printed forms, I create psychologically charged spaces in which faces are obscured, transformed, or replaced by symbolic elements. This allows the figures to move between portrait, metaphor, and projection. Light, perspective, and staged interiors play a central role in my process, often influenced by miniature room constructions I build beforehand. Combining contemporary visual culture with references to classical painting, my works create a tension between intimacy, estrangement, and subtle irony.
Anne von Westphalen (*1988, Sebnitz) is a Berlin-based artist working across painting and object-based practice. She studied at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK) with Pia Fries and Gregory Cumins and graduated as Meisterschülerin in 2015. Her work explores identity and perception through figurative compositions, often challenging traditional ideas of portraiture by obscuring or replacing the face.
