Alicia Roman (1992, Barcelona) is a painter based in Berlin. Working in oil on canvas, she creates figurative portraits of women that explore identity, insecurity, and self-acceptance. Her practice is rooted in painting as a psychological tool. Beginning with monochromatic references, she builds images through layered color, using bold contrasts of light and shadow to shape the emotional atmosphere and, influenced by Mediterranean tones such as yellow, ocher and blues, her palette balances warmth and tension.
Alicia’s works are an intimate reflection on our inner worlds and the journey toward self-love. She paints the emotional space between who we are, who we hope to become, and who we are learning to be.
Light and darkness play a central role in her work. She works from black-and-white photos, focusing on the reference values but intensifying the contrast. Through this process, light and darkness become a visual language that expresses both strength and vulnerability — the dual forces within each of us.
Color functions as an emotional extension of the paintings. Warm tones introduce tenderness and optimism, while cooler shadows evoke inner depth. Blues and yellowish oranges often appear to highlight complementary opposites and to recall her Mediterranean roots.
